Values and Goals: Our employers, bosses, and maybe your gym trainer gives you goals to achieve. I am a speaker to leaders on how to set career goals, and how to set strategic goals for their business, but also for yourself. Do not forget about yourself, and your goals are the most important! Do you sit down very often and write down your own goals yourself? Do you write them down as if you have achieved them?
How To Achieve Your Goals First, do the following:
Think of goals, not your work goals or goals for others, your own goals for life. Goals that have nothing to do with another person, but goals that only you can achieve.
Close your eyes and imagine yourself where you want to be. The perfect place in your life, not on an island, unless your goal is to live on one, but if life were perfect what would it look like and be realistic. Is it financial freedom, retirement, owning your own business, vacation destination, a new car. Then be still with your thoughts!
Now see yourself you are in your goal, you are there – you are visualizing your result. Now step through that, where are you now? How does it feel to have accomplished the goal? Now step through that, where are you now? What does it look like to have achieved the goal and looking back, where does achieving that goal take you? How does it feel? What does it look like to achieve the goal? If you are stuck and are not walking through, what is holding you back? Maybe you need to rethink where to start on the goal, are you starting in a place that is not realistic, what is holding you back.
Now take a notebook, a piece of paper, and write down everything that you thought about in no particular order. This is just the beginning. You are going to define the top 10 things that you want to achieve. So here are some of my goals:
1. I have a book title and topic picked out.
2. I have three trips planned with kids, husband and friends for the next year.
3. I have 3 paid speaking events booked to speak at by March 1.
Do you see the theme? I am writing my goals down as if they have already been achieved. How many goals should you have at one time? Depends, but before you decide this, remember you are setting yourself up for success, and you can only achieve so many things at one time. Too many goals will be hard to achieve; too few goals will not motivate you. 7-10 goals are a good place to start. A to-do list versus goals, they are different. A to-do list is the things you are going to do to achieve the goal. The goal is the outcome or accomplishment, not a to-do item.
Goals are long and short term, whatever is important to you. Goals stay on your list and are accomplished.
Here is the deal about goals:
1. If you are not writing down your goals, you are not getting what you want.
2. A goal is what you are doing, not what you are going to do.
3. Know the why behind your goal.
4. Know the person behind the goal.
5. Be reasonable with your goals.
6. Goals have a beginning, a middle and an achievement.
7. Goals will change you, reward you and give you purpose.

Values
What is the difference between a value and a goal? Living a healthy lifestyle is VALUE. Losing weight is a goal. Quitting smoking is the goal. Doing meaningful work is valuable. Affirming your partner each day is the goal. We often set goals, we take jobs, and we make life decisions without ever knowing what our true values are and how we are defined for us. Your goals cannot be defined without knowing what your values are, we can try and believe we know but if we do not know how we define our values, we will struggle with where we are in some fashion or another. Until you know:
You could be
Launching your Values...It’s a Process
This process can take a week, a month, or a day. You will define and redefine. Once you are done, make sure you do something that will help you recite them time after time.
Defining your values will:
1. Knowing your values will allow you to make deliberate choices and decisions
2. Your values play a part in where what and who
3. Allow your values to define who you are
4. Strong core values keep you fulfilled
5. Make your values allow you to prioritize your goals6. Values will guide how you will treat others and how others treat you
7. Be a slave to your values
